PORTSMOUTH - Daniel W. Macomber, 93, of Eliot, Maine, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Mr. Macomber was born Aug. 29, 1916, in Pine Point, Maine, the son of Harry W. and Nellie M. (Williams) Macomber. He attended schools in Jacksonville, Fla., and Eliot, where he met the love of his life, Wanda Spinney Macomber, whom he would marry and spend the rest of his life with.

Daniel is survived by his three daughters, Sheryl Roberts of West Newfield, Maine, Joan Anania of Barrington, and Meredith Horne and her husband, Bernie, of South Berwick, Maine; his grandchildren, Danette Bergstrom and her husband, Richard, of Eliot, and Mindy Anderson and her husband, Jim, of Haltom, Texas; great-grandchildren Joel, Cory and Mark; a sister-in-law, Barbara Kroska of Eliot; and several nieces and nephews.

Predeceasing Mr. Macomber was his wife, Wanda; a sister, Eleanor Leavitt and her husband, Howard; and a brother-in-law, Daniel Kroska.

WE REMEMBER: Mr. Macomber proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II from 1941 through 1945. Upon his return home, Mr. Macomber worked as a mechanic, owning his own garage for a period of time, and for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until his retirement.

Mr. Macomber was a member of the Naval Lodge Masons 184 A.F. and A.M. of Kittery, Maine, a life member of the American Legion Post 67 of Newmarket, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Macomber enjoyed camping, mining for gemstones, and spending time at the family camp on Silver Lake in Shapleigh, Maine. In his younger years he enjoyed traveling all over New England, racing Hydroplane boats, winning many trophies. "Danny" was known in the neighborhood as a Mr. Fix-It, often repairing the neighborhood children's bikes. He had a great affection for animals, and led a very active life which kept him young at heart.

SERVICES: A memorial service for Mr. Macomber will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery. In lieu of flowers, the Macomber family suggests memorials be made in Daniel's name to your local chapter of the S.P.C.A. Care for the Macomber family has been entrusted to J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.
