HUDSON - Winifred P. "Winnie" Higgins, 79, of 37 Gates Ave., died Monday, Nov. 1 at her son's home in Winchester, N.H.

Her husband, James J. Higgins, died in 1977. She leaves two sons, Michael Higgins of Winchester and Patrick Higgins of Hudson; a brother, Edward J. McDermott of Worcester; three sisters, Marie McGrath of Worcester, Claire Girouard of Paxton, and Sally Mullaney; two grandchildren. A son, James J. Higgins Jr., died in 1997. She was born in Worcester, daughter of James and Sadie (Kelley) McDermott, and lived in Hudson for many years. She graduated from St. Peter's High School in Worcester and attended Worcester State College. She graduated from St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester.

She was a public health nurse for many years, retiring in 1985. She was a first lieutenant in the Army, serving in Europe for three years during World War II. She was a member of St. Vincent Alumni, the State Nurses Association, the Hudson Women's Club, and the Catholic Daughters of America.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Nov. 4 from Tighe Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 48 Central St. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3 in the funeral home.
