DR. HENRY THOMAS, EX-MEDICAL CHIEF AT MAGEE, DIES AT 77

Dr. Henry W. Thomas, former chief of gynecological services at South Side Hospital and president of the medical staff at Magee-Womens Hospital, died Friday of complications of Alzheimer's disease at Shadyside Hospital. He was 77 and lived in Whitehall.

He also formerly operated an obstetrics and gynecology practice with offices Downtown and in the Brentwood-Whitehall area, from which he retired in 1979.

Dr. Thomas was also affiliated with West Penn and Shadyside hospitals and was an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School from 1948 to 1979, where he received his medical degree in 1938 at age 21.

A 1932 South High School graduate, he served as a field surgeon in Europe during World War II, primarily caring for German prisoners of war.

Surviving are a daughter, Catherine Baker of Whitehall; two sons, Dr. Robert H. of Boston, and Dr. James J. of Kansas City, Kan.; his mother, Catherine Thomas of Jefferson; a sister, Dorothy Sexauer of Whitehall; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow at John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, where services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
