Dr. Jack E. Cole, 93, of Bethlehem, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2008, in his home. Born in Matamoras, Pa., he was the son of the late Eli M. and Louise (Henneberg) Cole. Evelyn, his wife of 66 years, passed away 13 days earlier. He was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University where he received his Bachelors Degree in Science in 1937, University of Pennsylvania where he received his degree in Medicine in 1941. He was a member of St. Thomas United Church of Christ, Bethlehem, where he was a former member of the Consistory and the Choir. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice. He served his internship at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital from 1941-42. Dr. Cole practiced medicine, specializing in family practice in Matamoras in 1946-47 and served as a staff member for St. Lukes Hospital in Bethlehem since 1948. He practiced medicine specializing in family practice in Bethlehem from 1952-68, and 1973-89. Dr. Cole was an incorporator and member of the medical staff at Muhlenberg Hospital, a student health physician at Lehigh University from 1948-52 and was a physician in the Peace Corp in Afghanistan, Swaziland, and India from 1968-73. He was the mission leader for the medical team of United Church of Christ in Honduras in 1987. Dr. Cole was a preceptor at Temple University Medical School from 1978-86. He was the author of Wandering Voices, published in 1999, Richard and Sabina, published in 2001, and 4004 B.C., to be published this year. He contributed poetry to anthologies, children stories, and articles to professional publications. He was a charter member of the mission partnership committee of the Northeast PA conference of United Church of Christ in 1984. He served in the Army during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart and a Combat Medic badge. He was the recipient of the Recognition award from Temple Medical School in 1979 and the Boss of the Year award from Allentown Business Womens Association in 1975. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the A.M.A., Northampton County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Lehigh Valley Academy of Family Physicians, Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a member of the Greater Lehigh Valley Writers Group and a member of the H. Stanley Goodman Masonic Lodge 648.

Survivors: Five sons, Jack Cole Jr. and his wife Ann Hankins, Tom Cole and his wife Fern Bradley, Martin Cole and his wife Patricia, Bob Cole, and Christopher Cole and his wife Maya Matasaru; four daughters, Beverly Cole and her husband Bud Cole, Leslie Cole, Candy and her husband Rich Kenyon, and Jasmin and her husband Chris Scheetz; a sister, Shirley Van Inwegen; 13 grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m., Saturday, February 2, in St. Thomas United Church of Christ, Altonah and Macada Rds. Family and friends will be received from 1 p.m. until service time in the church.
